Score of 51 wins Drive Out Hunger tourney

In the lowest-scoring round in Drive Out Hunger history, Christian Scott, Matt Jeffers, Dan Curtis and Jerre Maynor took home the first place victory at this year’s Feed America First golf tournament with a score of 51.

The 11th Annual Drive Out Hunger Golf Classic was held Monday, May 7, at Westhaven Golf Course in Franklin. The tournament was a four-man scramble format, and Mulligan packages were available for $20, hence the low scores.

“I’ve been to a lot of scrambles, and I have never seen a team who won by nine strokes,” said Al Adams, FAF Board Treasurer and Golf Tournament Chairman. “That was an incredible round they had on a tough course.”

The event raised enough money to provide enough food for about 250,000 meals. Nineteen teams played in the tournament, and 15 of them had played in the tournament at least once before.

“That says a lot about their commitment to the mission of Feed America First, and that they are also out there having a good time at the event,” Al said. “It was a great tournament -- we had great weather, the course was in outstanding shape, and a lot of people complimented the food, saying it was fantastic.”

Before the tournament began, Logan’s Roadhouse served up barbecued pork ribs and chicken; and after the round, Qdoba Mexican Grill served chips, salsa and queso dip.

“So between the golf course, the weather, and the food, it was a fun day,” Al said.

“We enjoyed doing it, and we’ll be doing it again next year.”

He said that next year’s tournament will most likely be held in the second week of May, at Westhaven again.

There was a tie for second place, and in a scorecard playoff, the foursome of Cam Goodwin, Jeff Osburn, Dan Taylor and Charlie Plummer took home the second-place prize with a score of 60.

Third place went to Kyle Portugal, John Gibson, Jim Harter and Bud Gray, also with a score of 60.

Richard Ryden won the Longest Drive award. The Closest to the Pin award went to Harlan Whitley.
