FAF begins Equipment Upgrade Campaign to meet critical need

 

After 12 years of operation, 33 million pounds of food, and an estimated 500,000 hungry neighbors fed, Feed America First is nearing a mechanical breaking point.

The good news is that available food stores are plentiful, and we are on track to distribute 6 million pounds of food this year, a 20 percent increase over 2010’s 5 million pounds, our previous best year.

On the other hand, our trucks, refrigeration units, forklifts and other food handling equipment are being overworked to the point of exhaustion. Our aging equipment simply cannot keep up the pace.

To overcome this challenge, FAF has begun an 18-month Equipment Upgrade Campaign with a fundraising goal of $230,900. We are seeking additional financial support from all sectors to keep the food rolling past the landfill and into the hands of the 22,000 Middle Tennessee families we help feed each month.

In addition, we are planning an expansion into the rural counties to the north of Nashville within the next year, and this will add further wear and tear on our current equipment.

We are not seeking any brand-new equipment, but wish to make these upgrades with late model, serviceable, used equipment.

We have already purchased one late-model International 24’ refrigerated box truck to help keep pace with the current demand, but in order to continue to meet the current need, we need to replace our two older trucks as well. To continue to grow, we will need to add a fourth refrigerated box truck to complete our fleet.

 To meet our Equipment Upgrade Campaign fundraising goal of $230,900, we are seeking grant allocations from several private foundations that we have never applied to in the past, and are reaching out to new individuals, businesses and religious organizations in an effort to enlarge our support base.

At the same time, we are humbly asking our long-time supporters to please consider making an additional financial gift above and beyond your current donation level to be earmarked specifically for the Equipment Upgrade Campaign. We have included an additional envelope within this newsletter that is clearly marked “Equipment Upgrade Campaign” to be used for this purpose. Online givers can write “Equipment Upgrade” in the “instructions to seller” field on the Pay Pal confirmation form.

We are so thankful for all the support we’ve received from individuals, businesses and funding organizations that have propelled FAF to its current level of impact, but our mission is far from fulfilled. We want everyone to know that we need your support now more than ever to help us continue to feed our hungry neighbors throughout the next decade.

We believe that hunger will cease to be a problem in America when we refuse to let our neighbors go hungry, and only through the continued support of like-minded individuals will we continue to have an ever-growing impact on the lives of hundreds of thousands of our neighbors in need.
